Oh sure, the book had a little bit of this and a little dash of that, but it was also more than the sci-fi popcorn fare I had expected. It’s not exactly a new premise, which is why when I first picked up Six Wakes, I thought I knew what I was in for-a mindless space adventure-thriller, with a bit of mystery thrown in perhaps. Even at that moment with all the labor pains and her baby being born Devon was still in denial. As the reader I understand both sides of being scared, going into labor, and the awful crime of placing her living new born baby in the dumpster behind there building. Efaw did such a great job of having Devon as the narrator describing the teen’s emotions, and details of moments of denial throughout the book.Įfaw slowly reveals the plot as Devon recalls and develops insight and realism into what she had done. She backed away from most of her activities, her friends, her soccer coach and her neglectful, narcissistic mother. The whole nine months she carried on as if she never had an issue even to the point of making herself press all negativity to the back of her mind. The story is about Devon Davenport, a teen in trouble hiding the fact that she is pregnant. The story was fascinating in the saddest form but I believe how issues can be so stressful that the mind is in denial. She managed to maintain the perfect balance by being straight forward about dreadful details and yet descriptive enough not to go overboard. Efaw didn’t hesitate or twist the truth of the subject matter. I enjoyed the writing style, character development and the theme. This is a fascinating account of life in late eighteenth-century India-the first book written in English by an Indian-framed by a mini-biography of a remarkably versatile entrepreneur. Emigrating to Britain and living there for over half a century, Mahomet started what was probably the first Indian restaurant in England and then enjoyed a distinguished career as a practitioner of "oriental" medicine, i.e., therapeutic massage and herbal steam bath, in London and the seaside resort of Brighton. Fisher's portrayal of Mahomet's sojourn as an insider/outsider in India, Ireland, and England. This unusual study combines two books in one: the 1794 autobiographical travel narrative of an Indian, Dean Mahomet, recalling his years as camp-follower, servant, and subaltern officer in the East India Company's army (1769 to 1784) and Michael H. Let’s start with the adult titles!įinally, I wanted to also include a middle grade book. For me, one of the best parts about picking up a queer fantasy book is the possibility of being immersed in a world that doesn’t have heteronormativity or cissexism, because you’re building a whole different world, so you don’t have to pack in all of the prejudices from ours! I know there are a lot of people looking for queer fantasy set in worlds without any prejudice towards queer people - also known as “queernormative” or “queernorm” books! So I wanted to provide a place to start. |
